Every year thousands of people move to Los Angeles with hopes of launching a successful movie career. They come from Texas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Georgia, Louisiana–all over the U.S. and even from all over the world. Unfortunately, about 99% of the aspiring stars never find the success in Hollywood they dream of. They spend a year or two in L.A. taking acting classes, sending out headshots, trying to get auditions, trying to find an agent, trying to get a part in a movie, etc, etc. They try and try but to no avail.
The truth is many of the hopeful movie stars had no chance in the first place because they were lacking one of two necessary qualities:
- You have to be good looking, OR
- You have to be funny
That is it in a nutshell: either be good looking or funny. Of course even if you are good looking or funny this does not guarantee a career. There are lots of other things like personality, talent, intelligence and connections. But if you are not good-looking or funny, forget about it.
So you are thinking of moving to California and pursuing a movie career. Are you good looking? Good looking means sex appeal. How do you know if you are good looking and have sex appeal? Strangers comment on your looks (your mother doesn’t count), photographers ask you to model for them, men flirt with you constantly, you were voted the homecoming queen in high school, you won beauty pageants or bikini contests. If these things apply to you, then you are probably good looking.
But suppose you figured out that you come up a little short in the looks department. Well all is not lost. Maybe you are funny like Rosie O’Donnell. Now being funny is not simply being witty or having a sense of humor. It means performing funny and making people laugh. If you were the class clown in high school you may be a funny guy. If you act in comedy theatre in your hometown you are probably a funny gal. If you perform standup comedy in nightclubs and make people laugh hysterically you are definitely funny. If you have not done any of these things, why not? It could be that you just aren’t funny. Most people are not.
Evaluate yourself honestly. If you have already worked as a bikini model, then you probably are good looking and can think about career in Hollywood. If not, maybe you can try modeling first and see if you look good enough on film for the silver screen.
