Brief location update. I am still in Orange County, California but I moved from Dana Point to Lake Forest for the next week or so.
Here is the Google Satellite map of Lake Forest. [Scroll by dragging the image]
Lake Forest is in the foothills of the mountains here. The big mountain nearby is Saddleback or Santiago Peak which you can see from anywhere you are in south OC. It looks like a saddle. You may remember this area from last October 2007 when there were big wildfires in Silverado Canyon. Driving around around I can see the burned out hillsides.
The Y where the 5 and 405 meet is the Irvine Spectrum, a big outdoor mall and entertainment complex with a carousel and ferris wheel. There is also an IMAX movie theatre in there.
The airfield you see on the map is the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. You may remember that air base and the fighter squandron stationed there were destroyed by illegal aliens in the movie Independence Day. Later Will Smith met up with his girlfriend there. Also nearby are a couple of wilderness areas Whiting Ranch and Limestone Canyon Regional Park. A couple of years ago people were attacked and killed by a moutain lion not far from here. I might look into shooting some models there. Maybe I can get some shots of a bikini model petting a mountain lion.
They should probably post signs: Caution! Do Not Taunt The Lions!
Except for those wild animal attacks and the wildfires, Lake Forest is one of the safest cities in the country. According to Google, Lake Forest is 8.5 miles from Laguna Beach or about 18 minutes driving. You just follow Laguna Canyon Road and it takes you straight to Main Beach in Laguna. Here is a funny true story:
Once upon a time I was driving home to Laguna Beach. I had just gotten off the 405 and was heading down Laguna Canyon Road toward Laguna Beach when I ran out of gas! Bummer!
So I put the car in neutral and decided to coast as far as I could. Now it is mostly downhill to the ocean so gravity was in my favor. But there was one steep hill I had to get over. I slowed almost to a stop going up that darn hill. I was doing about 1/10 of a mile an hour. At one point I had to crank my starter to keep going! Then I had to make it through the stoplight at El Toro Road but I got lucky and it turned green as I coasted through. Eventually I coasted into the gas station on the corner of Broadway and PCH in Laguna Beach and coasted right up to the gas pump!
I had coasted about 8 miles up and down hills with no gas!
I think I was coasting with the engine turned off for about 20 minutes, practically from the I-5 to the beach! It was insane.
(Did I mention this was in the middle of rush hour traffic?)
