One of the most unusual of the new crop of fashion photographers is Terry Richardson.
Born in 1965 in New York City, he was raised in Hollywood, California. He has shot advertising campaigns for famous designers and labels including including Gucci, Levi’s, Miu Miu, Eres, Tommy Hilfiger, Club Monaco, Supreme, Hugo Boss, Anna Molinari, Stussy, Baby Phat, Jigsaw, Costume National, Hysteric Glamour, Matsuda, and Sisley. His work has appeared in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and he has published several photo books. His father is the international fashion photographer Bob Richardson.
He has become an international celebrity in his own right and has been called the Marquis de Sade of the magazine world because of his full-frontal assault.
One thing that makes his work unusual is that he uses minimalist equipment, often an old Kodak Instamatic camera from the 1960s. He believes this allows him to cut to the raw essence of a subject. Unlike most pro photographers, he normally has no elaborate lighting setup. Richardson’s photographs very often depict some kind of graphic nudity or sexual subject and can be quite startling.
