Photographer Dave Hill’s signal style has captured the imagination of viewers and photographers alike. His hyper-realistic images of hip-hop musicians, wrestlers and other characters have found many admirers.
Born in 1979 in Orange, California, Dave currently resides in North Hollywood, California. Dave is a top commercial and advertising photographer with clients throughout the world.
Dave’s is one of the new breed of photographer’s that makes heavy use of compositing and Photoshop to create his pictures. Most Dave Hill images are made up of many individual elements composited together creating the final image, much in the same way many Hollywood movies are made. His website has behind-the-scenes videos showing the amount of work that goes into creating each image.
Not surprisingly, trying to recreate Dave Hill’s signature look has become somewhat of a cottage industry with numerous Photoshop wizards and instructional websites offering advice and providing tutorials. But no one has quite yet discovered his secret recipe, so there is still only one Dave Hill.
Dave’s style can perhaps be described as hyperrealism. In some ways, Dave’s style has roots in the photorealism art movement from the late 1960s to the early 1970s which predates the modern era of computer imaging and Photoshop. Photorealism in turn owes much to the earlier tromp l’oeil paintings of the 19th century.
