All Dressed Up with Somewhere to Go

Girl wearing a black cocktail dress

A young lady strikes a pose on Prospect Svobody, the main pedestrian mall in Lviv, Ukraine. She is dressed up for a night out in her little black cocktail dress and black open-toed, medium-height heels. Women in Ukraine are some of the most fashionable in all the world. Many of the fashion models that walk the catwalks of New York and Paris for top fashion designers come from Ukraine.

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia’s always on my mind
–The Beatles, Back in the USSR, recorded 1968

The Beatle’s hit Back in the U.S.S.R. was the opening song on the White Album from 1968 and seemed like a nice youtube to open our series of street fashion “Scene on the Street” which begins in Lviv, Uraine. The song title pays homage to the Chuck Berry hit Back in the U.S.A. and the chorus recalls the Beach Boys California Girls.

The Beatles: BACK IN THE USSR

Flew in from Miami Beach BOAC
Didn’t get to bed last night
All the way the paper bag was on my knee
Man I had a dreadful flight
I’m back in the USSR
You don’t know how lucky you are boy
Back in the USSR

Been away so long I hardly knew the place
Gee it’s good to be back home
Leave it till tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey disconnect the phone
I’m back in the USSR
You don’t know how lucky you are boy
Back in the US, back in the US, back in the USSR

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia’s always on my mind

Yeah I’m back in the USSR
You don’t know how lucky you are boys
Back in the USSR

Well the Ukraine girls really knock me out
They leave the West behind
And Moscow girls make me sing and shout
That Georgia’s always on my mind

Oh, show me around your snow-peaked mountains way down south
Take me to your daddy’s farm
Let me hear your balalaika’s ringing out
Come and keep your comrade warm
I’m back in the USSR
Hey you don’t know how lucky you are boys
Back in the USSR
