John Phillips wrote the song San Francisco as the unofficial anthem for the Monterey Pop Festival, which is near San Francisco. Phillips helped organize the festival. This song captures the spirit of the Hippie movement during the Summer Of Love in 1967. Many peace activists and Hippies wore flowers in their hair.
