La Paloma

Girl in red dress sitting on stairs

Photo courtesy of Pictor Photo Archives. Shot on film and scanned onto PhotoCD.

Gloria was photographed in this red prom dress with her shoes off sitting on the stairs. This lovely young dove was photographed in Austin, Texas way back in 1993 when the United States President was Bill Clinton. Notice the hair styles and makeup styles during that period.

Si a tu ventana llega Una Paloma,
Tratala con cariño, Que es mi persona.
–La Paloma, Spanish composer Sebastián Iradier (1863)

Today’s musical selection is a real blast from the past: a 1920’s Victrola recording of the popular Cuban song La Paloma sung by Emilio de Gogorza. La Paloma was written by Spanish composer Sebastián Iradier in 1863. The dove motif represents a belief that a dove carries home a final message of love from sailors who are lost at sea. The song is a favorite in Mexico and around the world. It may be the most recorded song in history.

Here is another old rendition of La Paloma sung by Conchita Supervia.

Sebastián Iradier: LA PALOMA

(Refrain)

4. Cuando haya pasado tiempo ¡Valgame Dios!
De que estemos casaditos Pues sí señor,
Lo menos tendremos siete Y que furor!
O quince guachinanguitos Allá voy yo
