Picture number two for Shot On Film is this one of Karline from August 1997 when she was 16 years old. Like many girls before here, Karline came to California from Texas to pursue a modeling career in LA. She did her own makeup and all the fashion styling for this urban, hip-hop look.
Production Notes
It was shot on the rooftop of a building in Laguna Beach in the afternoon using natural light. I like shooting late in the afternoon in California because you get a beautiful golden light. The are no harsh shadows and you don’t need any lights. I would guess it was f/11 @ 1/125 using ISO 100 daylight Fujichrome film. The camera was a Nikon FM2 with a Nikkor 105MM Macro lens.
Post Production
The film was processed at Irvine Photo Graphics in Irvine, California and the original 35mm slide was scanned onto PhotoCD by Pacific Color in Seattle, Washington. This all back in 1997. Everything has been stored in our media vault for a dozen years.
For LBB, the PhotoCD Image file was converted to JPEG using Adobe Photoshop CS2.There were no adjustments made to the image; the file was converted in a batch process from Adobe Bridge CS2. The only thing added was the watermark logo and the image was resized for the web.
To Crop or Not To Crop…
We decided not to crop the image and leave the overscan. Back when this image first published it was cropped about 5% to get a clean edge. I think there is truthfulness in leaving the overscan. It is an artifact of chrome film and the scanning process that was used to produce it. Kind of like the way I like my studio to have the pipes and electrical conduits exposed. It is kind of raw and industrial.
