The Amtrak Sufliner goes from San Luis Obispo down to San Diego. It is one of the most scenic rides I have been on. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes to travel by train. You can either start in San Diego and go north, or start in San Luis Obispo and go to San Diego. If you are in Los Angeles, it is the best way to get to downtown San Diego. It leaves from L.A.’s Union Station many times each day. The fare is $29 one way. It is cheaper than driving, unless you have a group.
I spent a couple of weeks visiting Newport Beach in Orange County, so I got on the train at the Santa Ana station. Santa Ana does not have the best reputation as far as cities go. but the Santa Ana Amtrak station is really beautiful. It looks like one of the California missions. I had to take bus there from where I was staying in Newport Beach. Orange County Buses are operated by OCTA, or Orange County Transportation Authority. It costs $4 to ride there the whole day. One-way on one bus is $1.50.
Here is one of the views out the window of the Amtrakl Surfliner. I just snapped this shot through the glass. There is a little bit of glare from the sun. It’s just like being at the beach! I saw surfers all along the beaches from San Clemente to San Diego.
