Coronado Ferry in San Diego

While in San Diego, you must visit Coronado Island. To get there, you have three choices. By car, drive over the San Diego-Coronado Bridge. This is how people that live on Coronado commute to work or go shopping. There is also a bus that goes from downtown San Diego over the Coronado Bridge. Take the #901 bus at Broadway and 5th Avenue. You can also take the long way and drive along the narrow strip of sand connecting Coronado to the mainland. Nobody really goes that way unless they’re heading to the beach. Most tourists will find that it is easiest and most scenic to take the Coronado Ferry.
Whenever I travel, I never pass up a chance for a boat ride. You get a different perspective of wherever you are visiting from the water. From the Coronado Ferry you get a wonderful view of the city skylines from San Diego Bay. You get to see the aircraft carrier Midway from the sea. And you might catch a glimpse of seal lions like we did. The trip takes about half an hour. You will not get seasick because the bay is very calm.
Once in Coronado, you can either take the bus or walk (1/2 hour) up Orange Avenue to the center of town where you will find restaurants and shops. And of course there is the famous Hotel del Coronado which is a beautiful old luxury hotel on the beach.

The Coronado Ferry operates 7 days per week, and leaves from the a the Embarcadero at the end of Broadway every hour from 9 am until 9 pm, and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday. The cost is $6.50 for a round trip, which is a genuine travel bargain. Buy your ticket from the kiosk next to the boatslip.
