During your stay in San Diego, you will want to become familiar with the Number 30 Bus. Especially if you are staying downtown near the Gaslamp Quarter like I recommend.
Bus Number 30, or “Old #30″ as I like to call it, runs from downtown to the UCSD campus. Service is every 15 minutes from 5 am until midnight. Get on the 30 bus at one of the bus stops along Broadway. The bus route goes through Old Town, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Scripps Institute and terminates at the UCSD Transit Center. As you can tell from the route, it stops at many of the places you will want to visit when in San Diego. The whole route takes about one hour and twenty minutes.
For instance, spend a day on the sand at Pacific Beach. Even in the winter time there are surfers galore. If you go boogie boarding, you might want to wear a wetsuit because the Pacific Ocean is cold. Another day, visit chic La Jolla for lunch. You might as well take the bus because parking is a problem in La Jolla.
The Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography is another attraction that you can get to by the 30 bus. Get off at Downwind Way, across from Scripps Campus. Walk up Downwind Way to the aquarium (5 minutes).
To ride the bus, buy a ticket at any of the machines at a trolley stop. One way costs $2.50, but you will want to buy a day pass for $5. Have a five dollar bill ready. You can also buy a pass from the driver, but exact fare is required. The day pass is good for all the trolleys and buses in San Diego. There are also multi-day passes and monthly passes. You can buy the monthly passes at a VONS supermarket.
Number 150 Express
If you are at the UCSD campus, there is a faster way to get back to downtown. The Number 150 is the express bus that makes no local stops. It takes the I-5 freeway to Old Town and then straight to downtown. The ride takes about half an hour.
The buses and electric trolleys in San Diego are operated by the MTS (Metropolitan Transit System).
