Where to Eat in San Diego: The Cheeseshop

If you are staying in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, there are dozens of restaurants to choose from for lunch or dinner. You will get the best deal for a meal at lunch time.
One of my favorite places for lunch in the Gaslamp Quarter is the Cheeseshop Delicatessen on 4th Avenue. I learned about Cheeseshop on my first day in San Diego when someone on the street gave me a $1 off coupon. (Most people that approach you on the street in downtown San Diego are asking for a dollar, so I was surprised to get something.) I ate at the Cheeseshop a few days later and liked it enough to write about it and recommend it.

Basically, the Cheeseshop is a sandwich shop and deli, so it is busiest at lunchtime. I sat down at a table and was greeted by the waiter who gave me a menu. I didn’t see much cheese on the menu. But there were a lot of good sandwich choices on the lunch menu.

Their specialty is a roast loin of pork sandwich ($9.95) which was delicious, served with a side of cole slaw and a couple of pickles. They also have Mexican Coca-Cola on their menu ($2.25). In the U.S.A., Coca-Cola is made with high-fructose corn syrup. But in Mexico, it is still made the old-fashioned way with cane sugar. According to Coke aficionados, this has a better taste and I wholey agree. Also it is wise to avoid HFCS because it is an unnatural chemical. I rarely drink soft drinks in the U.S. because they contain high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
The bill with tax was $12.51. With a $2.50 tip the total damage was 15.01 USD. They take credit cards including Discovercard.
If you are in downtown San Diego, the Cheeseshop is a great place to go for lunch.
