An actress takes a smoking break between scenes. She has bright red lipstick, red nails and is wearing a bright red sleeveless dress with a slit up the side,

Today’s film clip is from the 1987 movie The Last Emperor from director Bernardo Bertolucci. The movie told the story of Pu Yi, the last of the Emperors of China. Starting from a noble birth, his reign as emperor in the Forbidden City, imprisonment by the Communists after the war and finally his obscure life as a peasant worker in Communist China. Joan Chen plays the part of Wan Jung, who was selected to be his Empress.

Here is the music over the opening credits and selected scenes fromThe Last Emperor. The music really sets the mood for the film quite well. The Oscar-winning score is by Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Byrne.

Also notice how everyone kowtows to the little child Emperor. And this was c. 1987, before CG (Computer Generated) crowds, so everyone must be a real human being. Or maybe they used some optical effect?

Here is the 1987 trailer for The Last Emperor.
