San Diego to The Big Apple
The next leg of my 2010 journey took me from warm and sunny San Diego, California to cold and rainy New York City. I traveled most of the way by air, but the last part of the trip was by train.
We were on schedule most of the way, but the train was delayed just outside of Manhattan because of bad weather. I knew that air travel is affected by bad weather, but I didn’t think trains would be stopped by rain. But flooding knocked out some of the signals which slowed down the train traffic. Thankfully, we were only delayed about one hour.
This leg of the trip was about 3,000 miles. The early settlers took many months to cross this vast distance. Now we can fly it inside of a day.
Once I got to Penn Station, I was able to walk to my hotel which was only a few blocks from the station. I have a folding hand truck that I travel with. It has big rubber tires and is almost as good as a regular hand truck, but it folds completely flat to stow in the overhead luggage compartment on the airplane. This makes it easier to haul all the camera gear I have. The bags get heavy with lights, cables, etc.
At first I was worried that the airline wouldn’t let me carry it on board. But so far I have not had any trouble with it. I get in the plane with a backpack, a camera bag, a guitar case and the folding hand truck.
