The Beatle’s First Hit: Love Me Do
The Beatles first recoding that made the charts was Love Me Do. The song was written by Paul McCartney in 1958 or 1959 when he was about 16 and still in school.

Back on 1962, the Beatles were a popular local band in Liverpool. Liverpool is seaport city in England located about 200 miles from London. The band had just returned from Hamburg, Germany and everyday at lunchtime the Beatles played at The Cavern, a basement club in downtown Liverpool. The local music weekly Mersey Beat ran a poll that showed The Beatles were the most popular band in Liverpool at the time.

The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein was trying to get the boys a recording contract, but was turned down by every major record label. Finally The Beatles were signed by Parlophone records, which was a small label. On June 6, 1962 the Beatles auditioned for record producer George Martin at Abbey Road Studios.

Recording Sessions
The first recording session with George Martin was on 4 September 1962. When they recorded How Do You Do It and Love Me Do. How Do You Do It later became a hot for Gerry and the Pacemakers. Ringo Starr played drums on the first recording, but the engineer complained about the drumming. So Love Me Do was recorded again on 11 September 1962 with session drummer Andy White. Ringo played tambourine and maracas.

Love Me Do was released on 5 October 1962. It made the charts in the U.K. at #17. The B-side was P.S. I Love You. In the U.S. the song was released on 27 April 1964 and became a #1 hit.
