
Like something out of a horror movie, a nightmarish face that resembles the face in Edvard Munch’s painting The Scream can be seen in the dust cloud from the crater of Eyjafjallajokull in southeast Iceland.
The image was captured by the Modis instrument on board Nasa’s Terra and Aqua satellites, which view the entire Earth’s surface once every two days.
The volcano erupted last week sending a dust cloud of volcanic ash that is covering the U.K. and much of Europe. Volcanic ash consists of jagged rock particles that can cause engine failure in aircraft. Air traffic has been shut down at many airports throughout Europe.
