Amsterdam, the capital city of The Netherlands, is a beautiful old European city. Every year, the city attracts millions of tourists. Amsterdam is a water city–it has a system of canals that are used for flood control as well as for transportation. There are concentric rings of canals around the downtown center. The rings are interconnected providing an efficient means of navigation. Naturally, there are canal boats and barges everywhere.
In additional to the many boats, another form of transport you see a lot in Amsterdam of is bicycles. Amsterdam qualifies as the bicycle capital of the world. In the city center, there are parking lots where commuters can park their bikes while they are at work. Some downtown parking lots accommodate thousands of bicycles.
Amsterdam is also famous, or infamous, for the Red Light district. Dutch society is the most tolerant in the world and many activities which are prohibited in less enlightened countries are perfectly legal in Holland. For instance, smoking marijuana or hashish is tolerated in coffee shops all over Amsterdam. And in the Red Light district, prostitution is completely legal and safe, as it is in much of Europe.
