Odessa, Ukraine is a big port city on the Black Sea coast. It is a great city to visit when touring Ukraine. But where to stay in Odessa? Hotels in Ukraine are generally expensive, and hotels in Odessa are no exception. However there are a couple of options for budget travelers. One choice is the Hotel Passage (Готель Пасаж).
The Hotel Passage features old-world luxury and is located right off Deribasivskaya Street, which is the main pedestrian street in Odessa. It is an old Soviet-style hotel, with an attendant on each floor. At one time, Hotel Passage was the fanciest hotel in town with large rooms and extra large hallways. However, the Passage has not been upgraded which makes it a great option for budget travelers.
Upon entering the lobby through the main entrance you see an older hotel from the glory days of the Soviet Union. This historic hotel is 112 years old so there is no telling who stayed here. It is likely that Leon Trotsky, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin and other leaders of the revolution were guests at this hotel at one time or another. Don’t expect anyone at the front desk to speak English. You better brush up on your Russian before arriving.
If you walk up the main staircase, you can see that the hotel was once an elegant place with all kinds of amenities. There are marble steps, big fancy mirrors and elegant woodwork in the stairway.
The hallways are long and wide. The Lonely Planet Ukraine guidebook claims that the halls are wide enough to swing a giraffe!
The cheapest room in Hotel Passage was 180 UAH. This room has a small sink and the toilet is down the hall. There is no shower, you will have to wash in the sink. For 260 UAH you can get a room with toilet and shower. Most people will probably choose this room. The only drawback to these rooms are the lack of air conditioning. In the summer, Odessa gets hot. Most days are in the mid to upper 30s.

Other Budget Accomodation Choices in Odessa
Now if you absolutely must have air conditioning in a budget accommodation in Odessa, try the Готель зірка (Hotel Zirka). They have tiny rooms, but there is a shower in each room and air conditioning. It is in a good location, only a few blocks from the center. It is a busy place and appears to be the budget choice for most Ukrainians visiting Odessa. You can get a room for as low as 195 UAH or 230 UAH per night.
