Facebook: Leave It To Zuckerberg

With the releaase of the movie The Social Network, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been getting a lot of press these days. But some of it is is not so flattering because Zuckerberg is portrayed in the movie as a guy who stabbed friends in the back and walked over people to get to the top. The tag line for the movie is

YOU DON’T GET TO 500 MILLION FRIENDS WITHOUT MAKING A FEW ENEMIES

But has anyone noticed a resemblence of the Facebook Founder Zuckerberg to Eddie Haskell from Leave It to Beaver?

Eddie Haskell from Leave It To BeaverMark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook

Eddie Haskell was the sneaky and duplicitous friend of Wally Cleaver on the 1950s television show Leave It To Beaver. Eddie was always well groomed and was ultra polite to grownups, like wally’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Cleaver. But his polite act was a facade masking his true persona. He was actually a scheming shirker who was always looking for the easy way out and had no consideration for anyone other than himself. This is how Facebook founder is portrayed in the movie.

Watch this clip of Leave It To Beaver on youtube and see if you can see an entrepreneurial spirit and future billionaire in Eddie Haskell’s character from Leave It To Beaver.

Here is an episode titled Eddie’s Girl from the second season in 1958. Wally has been invited to a dance with a girl that Eddie likes. By the way, Eddie Haskell was played by actor Ken Osmond. Eddie’s character has become an archetypal character in American popular culture. [Unfortunately, youtube has embedding disabled so click to open it in a new window.]

Eddie’s Girl Part 3/3

If you watched all three parts of this episode, you will see that Eddie Haskell ends up doing a good deed in the end and coming clean about his fibbing. Maybe there is salvation and redemption for Mark Zuckerberg after all.
