Take This Job And Shove It

Girl with arms crossed looking impatient

Take this job and shove it, I ain’t working no more
My woman done left and took all of the reasons I was working for
You better not try to stand in my way when I walk out the door
Take this job and shove it, I ain’t working here no more
–David Alan Coe, Take This Job And Shove It

Daria Alex was posing on this city street in Cluj-Napoca, Romania when she decided she just about had enough of this gig.

Today’s youtube is the Country & Western hit Take This Job and Shove it by David Alan Coe from his 1978 album Family Album. The song was covered by Johnny Paycheck in 1978 and hit number 1 on the charts. In 1981, a movie was made by the same name, inspired by the song. David Alan Coe played the part of Mooney in the film.

David Alan Coe was billed as The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy. Coe is a prolific songwriter, penning numerous C&W hits. He has a long career as a recording artist with 26 LPs to his credit.

Here is the hit recording of Take This Job And Shove it by Johnny Paycheck from about 1978. Paycheck’s real name was Donald Eugene Lytle. He was a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Johnny Paychecks career stumbled in the early 1990s when he was sent to prison for shooting a man in the head during a barroom brawl. But he made a comeback upon being released from prison.

Paycheck’s rendition of Take This Job And Shove It is angry and a bit over the top, but it proved popular with the redneck lunch pail crowd.

David Alan Coe’s original version, despite the angry-sounding title, is more empathetic to the plight and frustration of the working man. In the verses it is revealed that he is only thinking about telling off the boss, and is unable to act on those impulses. This is the much more realistic situation that the average working stiff finds himself in. Everyone’s gotta earn a living, so they grumble but must grin and bear it.

David Alan Coe: TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT
Key: G

CHORUS:
Take this job and shove it, I ain’t working no more
My woman done left and took all of the reasons I was working for
You better not try to stand in my way when I walk out the door
Take this job and shove it, I ain’t working here no more

I’ve been working in this factory pretty close to fifteen years
I’ve seen some of my best friends’ women standing in a pool of tears
I’ve seen a lot of kin folks dying, had a lot of bills to pay
But, Lord, I’d give the shirt right off’n my back, if I had the guts to say

CHORUS

The foreeman is a regular S.O.B., the line boss, he’s a fool
He’s got himself a brand new flat-top haircut, Lord, he really thinks that’s cool
One of these days I’m gonna blow my top and there’s gonna be hell to pay
I can’t wait to see their faces when I get the nerve to say

CHORUS

CHORUS:
G C G C G
Take this job and shove it, I ain’t working no more
G A D
My woman done left and took all of the reasons I was working for
G C G C G
