You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealing’
The Gambler, recorded by Kenny Rogers

Hillary definitely knows how to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em. Hillary is a cheesecake pinup model from Texas, USA. She is majoring in medicine with a minor in cheerleading at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Gambler is a hit song by Kenny Rogers from the 1978 album of the same name. The song achieved great popularity and Rogers won a Grammy award with it for best male country vocalist in 1980.

The song was written by Don Schlitz who had previously recorded it. His recording made #65 on the country charts. But it took Kenny Rogers’ gravelly voice to make the song a #1 hit. Maybe because Rogers looks and sounds like an old gambler out of the American west.

The Gambler is one of the all-time great story songs. Country and Western music has a long tradition of telling stories in the lyrics. The popularity of The Gambler may be the lyrics contain a universal message about how to survive in the world and even how to judge your success.

Here is the record on youtube, with subtitles.

Here is a CGI music video of the Gambler by Kenny Rogers.

Here’s a live version by Kenny Rogers on television show.

Kenny Rogers: THE GAMBLER lyrics
Songwriter: Don Schlitz
Key: E -> F

On a warm summer’s evening, on a train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gambler, we were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns a-starin’ out the window at the darkness
‘Til boredom overtook us, he began to speak

He said, “Son, I’ve made a life, out of readin’ peoples’ faces
And knowin’ what their cards were by the way they held their eyes
So if you don’t mind me sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey I’ll give you some advice”

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet and his face lost all expression
Said, “If you’re gonna play the game, boy, you gotta learn to play it right”

CHORUS:
You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealing’s done

Now every gambler knows that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep
‘Cause every hand’s a winner and every hand’s a loser
And the best you can hope for is to die in your sleep

So when he finished speakin’, he turned back towards the window
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler, he broke even
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep

Kenny Rogers: Hazardní hráč texty
Skladatel: Don Schlitz
Klíč: E -> F

Dokud nuda předjel nás a on začal mluvit

Vědět, kdy odejít a vědět, kdy chcete spustit

Rozdrtil svou cigaretu a vybledlé usnul
