Maramures is a region in northwestern Romania, just below the border with Ukraine. The biggest city in Maramures is Baia Mare, followed by Sighetu Marmatiei. Here is a Google map of Maramures county:
In Maramures, many things are still done the way they have been for hundreds of year. Horses pull wooden carts, people milk their cow everyday, and eggs are collected from the hens. Everyone seems to have some kind of job to do.
Two things stand out when you visit Maramures–hay bales and wood. Hay is feed for the animals in winter. It is a big job to put up enough hay for the winter, so everyone gets involved. The other thing you see is that everything is made from wood. There are wooded churches, wooden houses surrounded by wooden gates. Carpenters in Maramures are renowned for their skill in wood carving and are sought throughout Europe.

Althought there are couple of medium-sized cities in Maramures county, most people live in small villages. Often there is a group of houses surrounded by a wooden fence. Sometimes the front gate is eleborately carved to show the wealth of the family that lives there.
