We were at NAB 2011 in Las Vegas checking out all the movie cameras and film production equipment. One of the cool things many of the camera manufacturers do is build a interesting sets to point there cameras at. The idea is to create an environment and atmosphere.
Here is where the art department gets to shine! Designers create a stage which is then dressed for some particular theme. The sets are lit and populated with actors/models. There are all kinds of interesting and colorful props and set pieces. The work is done by professional set designers, set decorators and set lighters and would be worthy of a dramatic television show or TV sitcom.
This is what Hollywood is all about–taking a blank space like a showroom floor and creating an illusion that transports the audience to some specific place at some time. All the characters are professional actors and models.
This first set shows a cowboy theme with a mechanical bull and lasso twirling cowboy at Grass Valley’s booth.

Here’s a tattoo parlor at the Red Digital Cinema companies booth. Notice the red leather sofa and red tattoo chair continuing the red theme of the company. Red is their color because it symbolizes power and strength.

A barroom set complete with cold beer. This may be Sony’s booth.

I can’t recall which company had this small set with dried flowers, but it is very realistic

Here is a colorful living room set with large clocks at the Ikegami booth.

Arri had a old time theater setup with a live magician and his assistants. I really like the curtains and all the ropes and sandbags.

Here is a country style kitchen with a cook chopping up vegetables. Bushel baskets of apples, oranges and lemons make a colorful display to show off their cameras capabilities. Was this Panasonic?

Neigborhood street with stores (discount store, deli, babar shop), motor scooters, parking meters and a street musician. Very well done.

Here’s more of the street. A couple of women waiting for a bus. One is knitting and the other reading a magazine. This could be a painting.

Here’s a room in a big old house with antiques, knickknacks and toys strewn about everywhere.

Kind of a south-sea island Elvis room.

This formal country dining room decorated for Christmas was used to show off Canon’s XF105 3D camera.

TV Sports reporter outside the stadium ticket booth with souvenir stand.

Canon had this back alley with dumpster and garbage cans. Awesome design and lighting!

This car crashed through the wall and ended up in someone’s living room!

I hope you enjoyed these stage sets. They are a part of the NAB show that I look forward to seeing every year. The designers and decorators that created these sets all did an outstanding job this year at NAB 2011.
