Each year, millions of tourists visit the Grand Canyon. Not far from the Grand Canyon is the Red Rock Country of Sedona, Arizona. This scenic area, in Coconino National Forest, is known for its red famous rocks, many of which have names, like Bell Rock.

Sedona is located just over 2 hours from the center of Phoenix. To get there from Phoenix, you probably need an automobile. You would drive north on I-17 and then take AZ-179 a few miles. You pass the village of Oak Creek and then Sedona.
During the summer, the temperature is about 20 degrees F cooler than Phoenix.
If you are visiting the Grand Canyon, you are probably staying in or near Flagstaff. Sedona is only a hop, skip and jump from Flagstaff.
As you drive along the road in Sedona, there are many pullouts where you can stop and take pictures of the scenery.

One of the many sights to see if The Church of the Holy Cross, which is built right into the rocks. Park your car and walk up the road to the church. There are great views of the valley below from the church.

If you take the road up the mesa to the airport, there’s a parking lot and a lookout which gives a fine view of the valley. Bring your binoculars and camera along.

There are lots of companies offering guided tours of Sedona, like Pink Jeep Tours. They can take you to places that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to get to without 4WD.

You can also take a ride in an old biplane. It cost something like $119 per person. If you are by yourself, the fee is about $190. You will be able to get some great aerial photos from the place. There is also a helicopter tour. To get to the airport, take AZ-89A at the Y towards the western part of Sedona. (The Y is the roundabout where the 179 and 89A meet.) Then follow the sign to turn left to get to the airport.

There are a lot of trails to hike in Sedona. We didn’t have enough time to go hikinig when we were there. But if we visit Sedona again, we definitely plan on doing some hiking.
Downtown Sedona has a lot of restaurants and shops for tourists. A lot of Hollywood westerns were filmed in Sedona. Movie stars like John Wayne spent a lot of time working around these parts. There are stores where you can buy all kinds of cool cowboy stuff.
