The tiny fishing village of Hvar is a major holiday destinatin. Off the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea, Hvar (Town) lies on the south west coast of Hvar. Yachts big and small tie up in the port every day. Cruise ships also sometimes anchor off the coast, and cruise ship passengers are shuttled from the ship to the port, where they can enjoy fine dining at the many restaurants or stay at one of the dozen hotels.
Visitors of more modest means arrive by ferry boat. There are several trips daily on the fast catamaran from Split to Hvar, and also the car ferry (trajekt) from Split to Stary Grad. They can stay at one of the many private accommodations offered by the women holding signs that read “Sobe”, which means room.
