One of the landmarks in Hvar is the Spanjola Fortress high up on a hilltop overlooking the town and harbour. One of the reasons to hike up to the fort is the excellent aerial views of Hvar, the harbour, and the Pakleni islands (Pakleni Otoci). Otok means island and otoci is the plural of otok.
The fortress dates from the 16th century, although parts of the fortress are from earlier periods. In 1571, the fortress saved the lives of most of the townspeople where they took refuge when the Turks attacked the town.
The cost for entrance is 25 kuna.
