Let me tell ya ’bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called Love

Today’s youtube hit is a song by Jewel Akens titled The Birds and The Bees. The video is from the American television show Shindig c. 1965. It was a #2 hit in the spring of 1965. This song really deserved to be #1 because it’s really a nice tune to listen to and everyone likes it. The song was written by the teenage son of ERA Records owner Herb Newman.
The singer, Jewel Akens was born in Houston, Texas on 12 September 1940. He began singing in church. He moved with his family to Los Angeles and for a while he was part of a group called The Four Dots. Later he was with a doo-wop group called The Turnarounds. His big hits were The Birds and The Bees and Georgie Porgie.
“The birds and the bees” is a metaphor in English which refers to courtship and fornication. It usually refers to teaching someone, often a young virgin girl upon reaching puberty, about how to perform fellatio and sexual intercourse. Traditionally, a teenage girl coming of age often would have her first sexual experience with an older gentleman who would teach her about “the birds and the bees.”
Here’s the original hit record The Birds and The Bees.
Jewel Akens: THE BIRDS AND THE BEES
Let me tell ya ’bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called love
Let me tell ya ’bout the stars in the sky
And a girl and a guy
And the way they kiss
On a night like this
When I look into your big brown eyes
It’s so very plain to see
That it’s time you learned about the facts of life
Starting from A to Z
Let me tell ya ’bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
